Treatment Courts Pave the Way to Lasting Recovery

Treatment courts play a vital role in supporting individuals with mental health or substance use disorders, guiding them on paths to recovery. Throughout the month of May, treatment courts share powerful stories of transformation and raise public awareness about their impact on communities. In this blog, discover the essential work of treatment courts and look ahead to the RISE25 conference, where professionals gather to advance their mission.

Prioritizing Recovery and Reform

Treatment courts are specialized programs that service a wide range of individuals. These can include drug and mental health courts, juvenile and family treatment courts or veteran treatment courts. All of these provide an alternative to incarceration for those who have become involved in the justice system due to drug abuse, mental illness issues or trauma. Some courts offer those who complete the program the chance to have their offenses dismissed or expunged. According to All Rise, treatment courts are the most successful intervention for leading people with substance or mental health disorders out of the justice system and into a life of stability.

The process of treatment courts starts in the courtroom through a referral process and continues through the participant’s involvement in the treatment court. As a fictional example let’s look at Jordan, a 29-year-old struggling with substance use disorder who was arrested for a non-violent offense. Instead of serving time in jail, a prosecuting attorney reviews the case and determines Jordan is eligible for treatment court based on established criteria

Upon entering the program, Jordan’s profile is created in the treatment court’s case management platform. The digital intake process seamlessly captures details like court orders, key demographics and personal information. Any case managers or treatment providers are immediately connected to Jordan’s file and have real-time access to information. Using the data captured during intake, the treatment team designs a personalized plan for Jordan.

Throughout the program as Jordan attends therapy sessions, meets with members of the treatment court team and checks in with the judge, the software captures every milestone. Program staff can generate snapshots of Jordan’s progress and monitor key metrics to support program insights. After successfully completing the program, Jordan’s records of compliance and progress are available, helping to support future employment, housing applications and further education.

There are now more than 4,000 treatment courts in the United States. As their numbers grow, the success of their methods has become more apparent. Studies have shown that treatment courts create savings in court and prison costs as well as reduce costs associated with victimization. Those who complete treatment court programs are significantly less likely to re-offend, with the most successful courts reducing recidivism by as much as 35%.
