THE ROLE

The Database Administrator / Technical Specialist is an IT professional responsible for supporting mission critical technologies in Police, Fire and EMS environments. The successful candidate for this position enjoys working in a dynamic, fast-paced, collaborative team environment and interacting with clients. We are seeking a self-starter, who is continually considering ways to improve their own efficiency and the team’s productivity.
Roles and Responsibilities

Assist application support specialists and end-users in troubleshooting, diagnosis, and fixing of issues related to database environment and provide solution for issues and problems.

Provide operational support to incident management, change management, release management projects.

Assist with strategy and execution of migration from on-premise Informix, Oracle and PostgreSQL to AWS RDS/Aurora.

Conduct database optimization review of all aspects of database performance, installation, configuration, design, capacity planning, load-testing, and performance benchmarks.

Proactively monitor performance and ensure availability of AWS database environments.

Maintain database security by implementing the security policies, evaluating trends, anticipating security requirements, and applying security patches and fixes to database environment.

Provide technical advice, subject matter expertise, and guidance on the analysis, interpretation and evaluation of complex database features to continuously enhance the database environment according to emerging technologies.

Work effectively on several concurrent client and/or internal projects

Provide emergency off-hours support
Qualifications
-
Degree/Diploma in computer science or related field
-
Minimum of 5 years experience in database administration and data/database related field of expertise.

Certification in database technology platforms such as AWS RDS or MS SQL is an asset.
Desired Skills
-
In-depth knowledge of and experience working with two or more of MS SQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Informix, AWS RDS.

Expertise with core database modeling fundamentals, database optimization, query construction, and database architecture.

Experience designing and building scalable, distributed, fault-tolerant, high-uptime data systems.

Excellent knowledge of database security, backup and recovery/restore, performance monitoring, disaster recovery and business continuity planning.

Background with Linux operating system

Experience in working under virtualized environment (VMware).

Experience with cloud services (AWS, Microsoft Azure) an asset.

Ability to work independently and as an integral part of a cross-functional team

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Excellent problem solving and time management skills to handle multiple activities.

Ability to obtain a Government of Canada Reliability security clearance.
