LAW ENFORCEMENT INFORMATION SHARING PORTAL (LEIP)

Sharing Information

Developed in 2001 and extensively extended and refined since, LEIP enables disciplined information sharing between Police agencies, in a region, a province or state or even nationally. LEIP was designed to follow the “Internet search-engine model” in that agencies “publish” indexable and summary information (on people, places, vehicles, events) to a regional LEIP server. When an inquiring agency determines that they want more detailed information on a particular posting in their response, LEIP enables an authenticated “hot link” to the publishing agency's RMS server where that agency's constraints determine just what information will be released to this category of inquirer. Further, a detailed log is retained of exactly what information was released to whom and when. Highlights include:

  • Open access using national Justice XML standards with well documented interfaces

  • Open interfaces to non-Versadex RMS users (although totally integrated by Versadex)

  • Open architecture using Open Source O/S and DBMS

  • Designed to be used by the officer on the street as well as by detectives

  • Built in radius capability to enable the area of the search to be restricted or expanded

  • Secure with LEIP managing authentication of hot links and external accessible

  • Meets the various Freedom of Information and Privacy legislation

  • Infinitely extensible architecture both within a regional server and across a number of regional servers tied together

  • Fast response thanks to system architecture and model used

  • Affordable; uses low cost commodity servers and Open Source system software
